This class is designed to provide students with the reading skills and knowledge they need to help themselves become successfull. Students who try their best in the Academy of Reading section, complete assignments and read on a daily basis will improve their reading and be able to bring their grades up in their other subjects.
In order to improve one’s reading one must practice, just like with a sport or music. Daily reading practice will improve vocabulary, background knowledge, fluency, and endurance. Books are not the only thing students can read. They can also read magazines, graphic novels, informational books, comic books, anything that you approve of. Text messages and Facebook don’t count. Sorry.
Students are expected to do a Reading Contract every quarter. This counts as a test grade. The pages may be accumulated from one chapter book or from more than one chapter book. The books may be fiction or non-fiction. The first contract is for 300 pages. The next quarter contract will be 600 pages. Contracts can be picked up in my room or on my blackboard site.
